Ready, Steady, Click! by Stephen G. King is an excellent introduction to dog training based on positive reinforcement. The author clearly and concisely describes the science that underlies learning in all species, and applies it well to the training of pet dogs. The twenty Training Tips for Success at the end of the book are great guidelines for all trainers.

Clicker and whistle combination.
What is Clicker Training : Whether you are clicker training your Dog, Puppy or even a Cat this article gives a good introduction to clicker training by one of the UK’s leading animal behaviourist’s simply and concisely.
So what is a clicker?
A clicker is a child’s toy that clicker trainers have decided to use to reinforce or reward an animal’s behaviour. The clicker is a small metal and plastic device that makes a double clicking sound. Above is my new invention the WHIZZCLICK! Which is a combination clicker and whistle?

NO! Get off!
Instead of trying to stop misbehaviours with “NO, NO!” or add any other kind of physical punishment, lets think about what you DO want to see. You want to see him keep four paws on the floor or sitting instead of jumping.
This is an easy behaviour to shape and if you are consistent, the jumping behaviours should change almost immediately. You will be amazed at how fast this works!
1. Start by going out of room where your dog is situated. Take clicker and treats with you, and come back within a couple of minutes.

David Tazzyman original artwork
Dogs pull on the lead for many different reasons, but the main one is usually that we inadvertently reward them for doing it!!
It can start from when we take our puppy out for their first walk.
Most dogs tend to get excited when they see the lead as it means ‘walkies’. You put the lead on. He pulls you to the front door. Then down the garden path. The dog pulls all the way to the park and what do we do when we get to the park? We let him off the lead!! From your dogs’ point of view, he has been rewarded for pulling you all the way to the park. Positive Reinforcement
Teach precision and reliability in your dog through shaping and positive reinforcement. Whether you are a pet dog owner or are involved in Obedience, Agility, Working Trials or Show Dog training, this book will give you a great insight on how dogs learn and how to train your dog without force or compulsion. If you want a dog you can be proud of, then this book will show you how, even if you have never trained a dog before.
Here is another excellent and useful publication from Crosskeys and Stephen King. King is a pioneer in putting forth the practice of clicker training and the scientific principles that underlie it.

Control Unleashed combines a breath of fresh air in helping solving dog behaviour problems based on scientific principles. Leslie is a creative and interesting Author and the book Control Unleashed is packed with useful and sound training advice based on her experiences working with dogs over many years. Although the book is slanted towards agility it is without doubt one of the best books I have read for many years and should be of particular interest to those owners and handlers who have Dogs that have these particular problems such as: are unable to work off lead around other dogs. Dogs that are easily distracted and have difficulty concentrating. Dogs that are anxious or stressed. Dog that are unable to control their impulses when excited. Control Unleashed should take you to another level. As Leslie has said “This training program can change your dog’s life!”
